TOYOTA OF NORTH AMERICA | Reviving an Icon: The TRD Surf 4RunnerDesigning the Toyota TRD Surf 4Runner was an exercise in balancing modern off-road aggression with pure, nostalgic coastal heritage. My goal was to channel the legendary spirit of the classic 4Runner Surf into a contemporary, high-performance TRD package. By fusing rugged, trail-ready proportions with a distinct, lifestyle-driven aesthetic, we created a design that honors its iconic roots while pushing into the future.
As a designer on the Toyota TRD Surf 4Runner, my focus was on translating vintage off-road nostalgia into a bold, modern design language. The challenge lay in harmonizing the muscular, cutting-edge architecture of today's TRD lineup with the breezy, iconic elements of the 90s Surf legacy. Every line and detail was intentionally crafted to evoke a sense of freedom, creating a concept that feels both timeless and fiercely capable.
Re-imagining the Toyota 4Runner for the TRD Surf concept meant designing for the ultimate adventurer. I had the incredible opportunity to shape this project, integrating the modern, aggressive cues of Toyota Racing Development with the laid-back, retro-inspired DNA of the original Surf. The result is a bold, purpose-built vehicle designed to conquer the trails and command the coast.
